Slides, Filmstrips and Panoramic Film Scanning

Preserve Your Memories with the Right Scanner

Slides, films, and filmstrips were great methods to preserve old memories, however to view these memories, you’ll need specific equipment. We’ve dedicated this post to help you find the right scanner to convert these negative and positive transparencies into today’s digital format, allowing you to view and share these digitized memories.

Transparent Media Adapter (TMA) for film scanning

Our Solution

For this task, we recommend Microtek’s ScanMaker 9800XL Plus Professional A3 Graphic Scanner. This tabloid-size scanner features a 12″ x 17″ scan bed, 1600 x 3200-dpi optical resolution, 3.6 maximum optical density, a Hi-Speed USB interface, and one Smart-Touch button on the front panel for easy access to the scan function.

The ScanMaker 9800XL Plus uses an energy-saving LED light source that requires no warm-up, supporting eco-friendly initiatives. It has an optical dynamic range of 0.15~3.6 Dmax 3.7, delivering accurate color, superb shadows, crisp details, and sharp images.

With a true optical resolution of 1600 dpi, the ScanMaker 9800XL Plus captures a tremendous amount of detail from your large-format A3 scanner areas. This allows scans to be printed perfectly, revealing superior image quality.

A Transparent Media Adapter (TMA), also sometimes called a film adapter, is a device that allows a flatbed scanner to scan transparent media like 35mm slides and other film transparencies by shining light through the film. The SM-9800XL+ includes a TMA 1600-III as standard equipment or an optional accessory, depending on your purchase configuration. The TMA 1600-III allows you to scan X-rays, positive transparencies, and negative film in various formats and sizes.

35mm Slide Template

Use the 35mm Slide Template to scan 35mm slides, holding up to 4 mounted slides at a time. Place up to 4 templates on the scan bed simultaneously. You can mix it with other film templates (e.g., the 35mm strip template). However, the software can only scan either positive or negative film (not both) in a single batch scan.

35mm Strip Template

To scan 35mm filmstrips, use the 35mm Filmstrip Template. It can hold two strips of 6 frames each, or a total of 12 frames, simultaneously. Place up to 4 templates on the scan bed simultaneously. You can mix it with other film templates (e.g., the 35mm slide template). However, the software can only scan either positive or negative film (not both) in a single batch scan.

120 Film Template

For panoramic film 6×4.5 cm, 6×6 cm, 6×7 cm, 6×9 cm, and 6×17 cm scanning, use the 120 Film Template. It can hold up to 4 pieces of 6×4.5 cm film, 2 pieces of 6×9 cm film, or a single piece of 6×17 cm panoramic film.

5 x 4” Film Template

Up to six 5 x 4” templates can be placed on the scan bed at one time.

Black Plate

The Black Plate is designed to work with 120 film and reflective originals. It shields unwanted light and ensures correct exposure for optimal image quality during scanning.

Film Alignment Ruler

For non-standard-size film scanning such as 8″ x 10″ film, medical and dental X-rays, use the Film Alignment Ruler. It allows you to scan film up to 12″ x 16.9″ in size.
