Coeli is now Spectrum Compliant

What are Spectrum standards?

Spectrum 5.1 sets the UK Collections Management Standard and is globally recognized. It offers reliable advice on essential museum tasks for managing collections. These tasks include daily activities, such as moving objects. Additionally, there are occasional tasks, like updating insurance coverage. This guidance ensures museums operate smoothly and maintain their collections responsibly.

What is Spectrum?

Spectrum offers trusted advice on common museum practices for managing collections. Many activities, like relocating objects and updating their records, occur daily. Furthermore, tasks such as updating insurance coverage happen less frequently. Importantly, Spectrum categorizes these tasks as procedures, identifying 21 distinct types. This guidance helps museums maintain and protect their valuable collections efficiently. Each procedure plays a critical role, ensuring the preservation and accessibility of historical artifacts. As a result, museums can operate smoothly and uphold their commitment to cultural stewardship.

Who is it for?

All museums, regardless of size or collection type, require Spectrum, and it can also benefit similar institutions with museum-like collections. To simplify, we refer to all collections-based organizations as ‘museum’ and use ‘you’ to represent everyone involved in managing these collections. This includes governing bodies responsible for policies and budgets, as well as all staff and volunteers, whether they work front-of-house or behind the scenes.

Moreover, if software adheres to Spectrum standards, it provides a specific place for each unit of information necessary for any procedure. Although a perfect match between Spectrum units and system fields isn’t always possible, the developer demonstrates to Collections Trust how they correspond. More crucially, the developer will guide you on recording any Spectrum unit using their system. Consequently, only systems approved by Collections Trust may identify as Spectrum Compliant.

Who is Collections Trust?

Collections Trust, based in the UK, has a history stretching back to the 1970s. This organization works internationally, aiming to assist museums in engaging audiences effectively. They focus on helping these institutions manage the information that bridges visitors and collections. Additionally, their standards and advice are implemented globally, enhancing the accessibility of museum collections. Moreover, at the heart of their efforts is Spectrum, the collection management standard. This standard offers tried-and-tested guidance on more than twenty museum procedures, proving essential for efficient collection management.
